| Submission Guidelines
IDEA Magazine is calling all writers, artists, thinkers and everyday people to contribute to a publication that is redefining how we think and act in the world. We pursue diverse perspectives in a non-partisan forum for communication and change. We welcome submissions from anyone regardless of background or previous publishing experience.
What we're looking for:
IDEA Magazine is looking for content that speaks from the gut and the heart. We are not interested in flash, polemics, ideology, credentials, lecturing or bickering. The hackneyed tools of journalism are discouraged here. We are interested in sincerity and interchange. When contributing to IDEA Magazine you should feel free, and not restricted by the tastes of an editor or audience. If you had only one opportunity to speak to the world, what would you say? That’s what we want to publish. IDEA Magazine is looking beyond marketing or information overload. We are looking for communication that creates understanding, stimulates dialogue, and builds a sense of participation and shared investment in our future.
Acceptable Formats:
IDEA Magazine accepts contributions to our designated themes in the form of non-fiction (articles, essays, criticism, interviews, memoirs, letters, whatever), fiction, poetry, or art (photography, illustration, painting, comics, sculpture) that can be posted as graphics on a website. Sorry, no audio or video at this time. If you have a visual submission, it must be accompanied by a written explanation relating it to the designated theme. Honesty and authenticity are more important than slick packaging. Please limit non-fiction pieces to 3,000 words and fiction to 6,000 words unless you can convince us otherwise. Material will be accepted and published in languages other than English but must be accompanied by an English translation.
Designers and Artists Take Note:
IDEA Magazine also invites contributions to our merchandising and design departments, where ideas (from the magazine or elsewhere) are translated into slogans, logos and designs that can penetrate the popular imagination on clothing, stickers, and other products. See Spread Ideas for more details.
Copyright Considerations:
IDEA Magazine encourages its contributors to relinquish partial copyright to their material so that good ideas can circulate freely and enrich the intellectual commons. We recommend using a Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Share-alike license that requires any copies of your work to credit you and be non-commercial in use. There are growing examples of literature, music, art and journalism reaching larger audiences with less stringent copyright limitations. Just as a virus spreads more quickly through open vectors, we want to open pathways for good content to spread throughout the idea economy. If you want to retain a stricter copyright on your contribution you may negotiate with us personally.
No payment offered at this time.
Please send submissions to:

Create Your Own IDEA
IDEA Magazine invites contributors to propose and/or become the ongoing editor of a content theme, or “IDEA.” Editing a theme requires an in-depth understanding of the editorial personality and feel of IDEA Magazine and taking responsibility for working with writers, and soliciting and posting submissions on a regular basis. While the senior editors at IDEA Magazine retain editorial oversight, we encourage our readers to become active participants in this enterprise. By developing an interactive, horizontal relationship with our audiences, we are creating a self-replicating network of thinkers and communicators capable of transforming our intellectual and cultural landscape.
